Happy New Year

2008 started off in the Pacific Northwest with the blue screen of erectile dysfunction when a software glitch caused the fireworks show at the Seattle space needle to put on a pathetic display of the classic difference between a feature and a bug. Maybe they should pass out t-shirts.

Probably the most amusing part of it all is the inevitable whining and complaining that accompanies such a disappointing display of wasted manhood. It's just so Seattle to whine insignificantly about things. I tend more toward it was a sucky year for a lot of people and as 2007 skulked away in shame, 2008 is still appalled at how bad things were for so many that it's reluctant to step in and take over properly.

And speaking of skulking away in shame, if they were capable of such a human emotion, only twelve more months until Bush and Cheney leave the residences they have permanently soiled. They'll probably sneak out in the middle of the night like the thieves they are and history will remember them as.

A computer "glitch" brought them into power and another one will herald the year of their departure.

Why Impeachment Is Still Not Being Served

The list of Reasons To Impeach George Bush are many and in a few years will be discussed by historians and legal scholars as blatant and criminal and shameful in their scope. Much will be written about the Congress who was so indebted to corporate masters that they couldn't move one step toward stopping the madness of King George without fear of stepping on some lobbyist's expensive shoes. Schools will teach about the many dismissed polls, the many set aside demands, the raging and rising anger of the population that was so completely and wrongly ignored by the congress they elected to rid them of the Bush/Cheney plague. How could a congress become so powerful, so insulated that the will of the people didn't matter?

In trying to research the answer to that I ran across this article in Salon that very clearly describes the why of many things I didn't consider. Why We Haven't Impeached.

What I found the most interesting was the insight that our relationship with Bush is that of someone stuck in a bad marriage who are just waiting for it to come to its natural end. But this waiting is also because Bush is doing what no one else has been able to do: he is destroying the Republican party. Many of the loyal opposition feel it is worth it not to impeach him because each day that goes by, each dirty trick, each betrayal of America's trust that is revealed, is one more piece of the Republican party that Bush takes down with him.

And it is a party that deserves to be taken down because it is synonymous with religious extremism, bigotry, racism, and corporate raping and pillaging of the planet for personal greed. To let it continue unchecked and unaccountable is to let loose the barbarians, the savages, the American Christo-Fascist incarnation of the Taliban it supposedly is fighting. As long as Bush is President, the smaller the line becomes between America's enemies and its own psyche. The Democratic congress is basically letting Bush dig the Republican's grave with shovels he stole from the American people.

May he end up with a hole big enough to humble once and for all an ego that is far bigger than any action in his life warranted. He will go down in history as a small-minded and petty tyrant that accomplished only one thing: the destruction of his own party for generations to come.

But the saddest part of the Salon article is what it reveals about many Americans. Bush could not have started a war without the blood lust and bigotry of a large portion of the American people. To impeach Bush isn't just a matter of saying he is a bad person. It is saying that a majority of Americans also have to deal with the bad person inside themselves who allowed him to do what he has done. Inside that insight is perhaps the real reason this idiotic and evil meat puppet is still president.

War, Our Disposal Society, and Love

Upon first glance it seems ridiculous to link together the Iraq war, our disposable society, and the failure of so many of my friends' marriages. But each of those is a thread in what is rapidly becoming a self-woven funeral shroud for the majority of Americans. The loom this tapestry weaves itself from with our help is the idea that nothing lasts, that everything can be replaced, that a newer model is an upgrade rather than a lie we choose to believe with all the fervor that comes from seeing Napoleon in the mirror.

The temporal nature of our society is at its best a place where newness can flourish, where cultures can evolve, and where change is a good thing. At its worst, change becomes an object of fear and scorn. It becomes the hermetically sealed culture that half my family immigrated to get away from. If I went back there and stayed within my proper "station" in life, the only people I could have as friends without being ostracized and considered an outcast would be mostly in their 80's and 90's because they are the ones who stayed the same by resisting change.

Here in America the underpinnings of that are already in place, but with a certain depravity that raises uncultured, poorly educated, and boorish clans likes the Bushes into a form of demented monarchy. This elevation of pigs into pigs with diamond pinky rings is so typically American that most would consider me snobbish and nationalistic upon hearing it, unless they also understood that these pigs are the ones who send their sons and daughter, the true diversity that is America , the true change that created the dream of America, off to fight their wars for them.

They do this easily because such people are as meaningless to them as plastic cigarette lighters. The horribly inbred monarchies of other countries pass on their cruelty genes by getting more and more out of touch with what ordinary people want and need. This aberration of generational distance is starting to take root here where money and power keeps these families isolated from the rabble that would gladly kill them with their bare hands if given half a chance. Just as some people fear cigarette lighters because they also have the potential to fry their asses, so do these inbred culture less monarch-wannabes fear the incendiary temper of the population who are ready to drag them to the first handy stake--or considering that this is America and with the consciousness so focused on Texas and its version of "cuisine," the stake would no doubt be exchanged for a big-ass barbecue grill.

Because these families don't rise to power by work, intellect, or talent, they are forced to make their money through drugs, prostitution, hired killings, and war. Politics is simply the means by which they are able to practice their trades outside the rule of law. This is why they need war, why they demand war, why every politician who has pounded his fist on the table for war, stood to profit obscenely from it one way or another.

And to fight these wars for them, to die in these wars for them, they need expendable people. They need to make immigrants bad and corrupt and scary because how else are we the people going to allow our government to use them as cannon fodder? Although official figures from anyone in this corrupt administration are suspect, I'm willing to bet an astonishing number of our troops in Iraq are "Green Card Soldiers"--immigrants, legal and otherwise, who are promised an expedited path to citizenship if they live long enough to collect.

The other expendables are poor, uneducated savages that political parties absolutely love because they can do double duty for them; they can serve as cannon fodder AND propaganda tools. Our state-run media like Faux News does not target the educated. It targets the crackers, the bigots, the fundie loonies and uses them as a sort of easily manipulated robot to do their bidding for them. All it takes is some free hot dogs, the mandatory corn syrup laden beverage of choice, and a few tunes from a hate mongering racist and they'll support their grandmother dying in some country they can't find on a map if their lives depended upon it.

Finally, what does this have to do with all my friends seeming to go ape shit at once and wanting divorces, lovers, a new life under a different name, dream, or car color? A lot. We've all been so completely programmed to believe that if something doesn't work perfectly you take it back for a refund or an exchange. We don't even question it anymore. It doesn't work. Take it back.

Keep it around when everyone has a new one? You've got to be kidding! Everyone knows an upgrade is good. Just ask anyone who installed Vista or the latest Internet Explorer on their computers if upgrades are good. I recommend doing this only if you can run really really fast and don't mind having a string of curses unleashed on you.

Grow old together? Why? We're all going to die in some horrible terrorist attack or get drafted and die in some politician's personal piggy bank anyway. The world's going to end and when that day comes, do you really want to turn to the person you've spent most of your life with and regret everyone you've let slip away? Fuck commitment! Grab that girl or boy toy before the last sands run out of the damned hourglass. There's no time for anything else! We're all going to die, a sad bundle of regrets and wasted dreams, so why not have it all now? We're all expendable. They all have trophy wives, boy toys, gas-guzzling piggie cars. Who cares about the environment when the first gray hairs stare back at us from the mirror? Who cares about people, about the planet, about each other? We're all going to die anyway. Horribly. Sadly. And far too soon.

So you see, they are all sadly related and maybe, just maybe if we started putting an end to war it could end up saving our relationships. It's worth a try.

Wake Up America!

While America sleeps, Bush finds new and more odious ways to use the Constitution as toilet paper. You don't have to be a lawyer to see that with the appalling lack of ethics and disregard for the rule of law, this latest signing statement can easily be used against those who protest against the war or any of Bushco's war. And as someone who sells t-shirts and other designs that call for our immediate withdrawal from Iraq and "undermines" our reasons for being there by calling them the lies that they are, I can be perceived by these sick fucking Fascists in the white house as being an economical criminal working against the war machine.

Unless you want to stand with me in one of Bushco's future Kangaroo courts, phone, write, email your Congressional representative NOW. I've made up some cards for you to send. You can now buy individual greeting cards, although I encourage you to buy a package of postcards and pass them out to friends and family to send as well. You can bet the war machine's minions are making noise FOR this piece of crap signing statement. Twenty years from now are you going to pretend to your children and grandchildren that you just didn't know what was going on or you would have spoken up? One of my dear friends took her own life a few years ago when she found out her father was a complicit in the death of "political prisoners" in Nazi Germany. Will this be your children's fate? Your grandchildren? Speak up now while you still have a voice.

Bush's latest signing statement

Why Haven't Bush and Cheney Been Impeached Yet?

For those who wonder what it takes to impeach a President for real crimes instead of lying about a blow job, here are the articles of impeachment used on Nixon. (and if lying to Congress is as serious as the right wingnuts claimed when they were screaming about Clinton, why isn't it serious when Bush does it repeatedly?)

In reading over these Articles of Impeachment, I am struck by how many of the crimes listed as committed by Nixon could just as easily be listed as committed by Bush. In many of the statements, the crimes overlap so closely they could be the same man committing the same crime.

So I ask as you should be asking after reading this, why isn't Congress seriously considering impeachment against Bush? Who bought their silence and obedience? Why is this criminal still President?

Articles of Impeachment:

RESOLVED, That Richard M. Nixon, President of the United States, is impeached for high crimes and misdemeanors, and that the following articles of impeachment to be exhibited to the Senate:

ARTICLES OF IMPEACHMENT EXHIBITED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IN THE NAME OF ITSELF AND OF ALL OF THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AGAINST RICHARD M. NIXON, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN MAINTENANCE AND SUPPORT OF ITS IMPEACHMENT AGAINST HIM FOR HIGH CRIMES AND MISDEMEANOURS.

Article 1: Obstruction of Justice.

In his conduct of the office of the President of the United States, Richard M. Nixon, in violation of his constitutional oath faithfully to execute the office of President of the United States and, to the best of his ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States, and in violation of his constitutional duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, has prevented, obstructed, and impeded the administration of justice, in that: On June 17, 1972, and prior thereto, agents of the Committee for the Re-Election of the President committed unlawful entry of the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee in Washington, District of Columbia, for the purpose of securing political intelligence. Subsequent thereto, Richard M. Nixon, using the powers of his high office, engaged personally and through his subordinates and agents in a course of conduct or plan designed to delay, impede and obstruct investigations of such unlawful entry; to cover up, conceal and protect those responsible and to conceal the existence and scope of other unlawful covert activities. The means used to implement this course of conduct or plan have included one or more of the following:

(1) Making or causing to be made false or misleading statements to lawfully authorized investigative officers and employees of the United States.

(2) Withholding relevant and material evidence or information from lawfully authorized investigative officers and employees of the United States.

(3) Approving, condoning, acquiescing in, and counseling witnesses with respect to the giving of false or misleading statements to lawfully authorized investigative officers and employees of the United States and false or misleading testimony in duly instituted judicial and congressional proceedings.

(4) Interfering or endeavoring to interfere with the conduct of investigations by the Department of Justice of the United States, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the office of Watergate Special Prosecution Force and congressional committees.

(5) Approving, condoning, and acquiescing in, the surreptitious payments of substantial sums of money for the purpose of obtaining the silence or influencing the testimony of witnesses, potential witnesses or individuals who participated in such unlawful entry and other illegal activities.

(6) Endeavoring to misuse the Central Intelligence Agency, an agency of the United States.

(7) Disseminating information received from officers of the Department of Justice of the United States to subjects of investigations conducted by lawfully authorized investigative officers and employees of the United States for the purpose of aiding and assisting such subjects in their attempts to avoid criminal liability.

(8) Making false or misleading public statements for the purpose of deceiving the people of the United States into believing that a thorough and complete investigation has been conducted with respect to allegation of misconduct on the part of personnel of the Executive Branch of the United States and personnel of the Committee for the Re-Election of the President, and that there was no involvement of such personnel in such misconduct; or

(9) Endeavoring to cause prospective defendants, and individuals duly tried and convicted, to expect favored treatment and consideration in return for their silence or false testimony, or rewarding individuals for their silence or false testimony.

In all of this, Richard M. Nixon has acted in a manner contrary to his trust as President and subversive of constitutional government, to the great prejudice of the cause of law and justice and to the manifest injury of the people of the United States.

Wherefore Richard M. Nixon, by such conduct, warrants impeachment and trial, and removal from office.

(Approved by a vote of 27-11 by the House Judiciary Committee on Saturday, July 27, 1974.)

Article 2: Abuse of Power.

Using the powers of the office of President of the United States, Richard M. Nixon, in violation of his constitutional oath faithfully to execute the office of President of the United States and, to the best of his ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States, and in disregard of his constitutional duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, has repeatedly engaged in conduct violating the constitutional rights of citizens, imparting the due and proper administration of justice and the conduct of lawful inquiries, or contravening the laws governing agencies of the executive branch and the purposes of these agencies.
This conduct has included one or more of the following:

(1) He has, acting personally and through his subordinated and agents, endeavored to obtain from the Internal Revenue Service, in violation of the constitutional rights of citizens, confidential information contained in income tax returns for purposes not authorized by law, and to cause, in violation of the constitutional rights of citizens, income tax audits or other income tax investigation to be initiated or conducted in a discriminatory manner.

(2) He misused the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Secret Service, and other executive personnel, in violation or disregard of the constitutional rights of citizens, by directing or authorizing such agencies or personnel to conduct or continue electronic surveillance or other investigations for purposes unrelated to national security, the enforcement of laws, or any other lawful function of his office; he did direct, authorize, or permit the use of information obtained thereby for purposes unrelated to national security, the enforcement of laws, or any other lawful function of his office; and he did direct the concealment of certain records made by the Federal Bureau of Investigation of electronic surveillance.

(3) He has, acting personally and through his subordinates and agents, in violation or disregard of the constitutional rights of citizens, authorized and permitted to be maintained a secret investigative unit within the office of the President, financed in part with money derived from campaign contributions to him, which unlawfully utilized the resources of the Central Intelligence Agency, engaged in covert and unlawful activities, and attempted to prejudice the constitutional right of an accused to a fair trial.

(4) He has failed to take care that the laws were faithfully executed by failing to act when he knew or had reason to know that his close subordinates endeavored to impede and frustrate lawful inquiries by duly constituted executive; judicial and legislative entities concerning the unlawful entry into the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee, and the cover-up thereof, and concerning other unlawful activities including those relating to the confirmation of Richard Kleindienst as attorney general of the United States, the electronic surveillance of private citizens, the break-in into the office of Dr. Lewis Fielding, and the campaign financing practices of the Committee to Re-elect the President.

(5) In disregard of the rule of law: he knowingly misused the executive power by interfering with agencies of the executive branch: including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Criminal Division and the Office of Watergate Special Prosecution Force of the Department of Justice, in violation of his duty to take care that the laws by faithfully executed.

(Approved 28-10 by the House Judiciary Committee on Monday, July 29, 1974.)

Article 3: Contempt of Congress.

In his conduct of the office of President of the United States, Richard M. Nixon, contrary to his oath faithfully to execute the office of the President of the United States, and to the best of his ability preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, and in violation of his constitutional duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, had failed without lawful cause or excuse, to produce papers and things as directed by duly authorized subpoenas issued by the Committee on the Judiciary of the House of Representatives, on April 11, 1974, May 15, 1974, May 30, 1974, and June 24, 1974, and willfully disobeyed such subpoenas. The subpoenaed papers and things were deemed necessary by the Committee in order to resolve by direct evidence fundamental, factual questions relating to Presidential direction, knowledge or approval of actions demonstrated by other evidence to be substantial grounds for impeachment of the President. In refusing to produce these papers and things, Richard M. Nixon, substituting his judgement as to what materials were necessary for the inquiry, interposed the powers of the Presidency against the lawful subpoenas of the House of Representatives, thereby assuming to himself functions and judgments necessary to the exercise of the sole power of impeachment vested by Constitution in the House of Representatives.

In all this, Richard M. Nixon has acted in a manner contrary to his trust as President and subversive of constitutional government, to the great prejudice of the cause of law and justice, and to the manifest injury of the people of the United States.

Wherefore, Richard M. Nixon, by such conduct, warrants impeachment and trial and removal from office.

(Approved 21-17 by the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, July 30, 1974.)
